FRIENDS In 2026
FRIENDS, the iconic American sitcom that gained global popularity and fandom, continues to enthrall audience even 22 years after the last episode aired. In hindsight, new-age audiences find aspects of the series problematic or dated, but for the millennial audience, this show is like their digital security blanket.
This series, which spanned 10 successful seasons, has adapted very easily from TV to streaming platforms, and the characters have become household names. Today, when we see someone being sarcastic, we are quick to call them “Chandler Bing,” and someone who is a stickler for correct grammar is referred to as the “Ross” of the group.
Watching and rewatching FRIENDS has become a rite of passage not just for millennials but also for Gen Z and Gen Alpha, who find its predictability comforting amid the anxiety of modern digital life.
However, what would our favourite characters be like in an alternate universe? Would Joey be different if he were a food blogger? How would Rachel do if she weren’t a part of the fashion industry? Would they all still remain the same?
In this article, we take creative liberties with one of the most endearing shows and its iconic characters, reimagining their career paths. Let’s explore!
Monica – Farm-to-Table Chef
Given her love of cooking, hosting, and feeding people, we believe Monica Geller would probably do well as an organic farmer or an allotment grower. Can’t you just picture her excitedly sharing allotment tips with her friends and then preparing tasting menus with ingredients harvested fresh from the fields?
Monica is a perfectionist and insists on using only the best-quality ingredients. There is nothing like plucking blackberries and currants from her own farm and making those delicious jams or cooking free-range turkey for Thanksgiving.
She thrives on competition, and her immense fondness for hosting would have made her a successful farm-to-table chef.
Alternatively, Monica would also have made a great crime scene cleaner or forensic expert, given her obsession with cleanliness, stickler for rules and eye for details. No matter what career path she would choose, Mon would surely be the best (or she wouldn’t rest).
Phoebe – Sustainable Fashion Designer
While Rachel was the resident fashionista, working with top luxury brands like Ralph Lauren, Phoebe Buffay, the quirkiest friend, had a unique approach to sartorial choices.
Her wardrobe in the show was eclectic, with chunky necklaces and stacks of rings, bohemian skirts with edgy, fun prints, and outfits that screamed fashion while being comfortable. Her polka-dot leggings, printed tops, and funny sweater, along with her flair for repeating outfits and upcycling them to keep her style on-trend, make Phoebe the perfect candidate to become a new-age fashion designer who promotes sustainability.
In 2026, Phoebe, with her strong ethical values and a DIY approach, would probably be making a select few pieces (no mass production). She would probably be using threads and needles bought online at wholesale prices through quality haberdasheries like Realm Wholesale, along with fabrics that are organically sourced, dyed, and sold.
Pheebs would also have made a great host for a conspiracy podcast or a shaman, given her obsession with communicating with the spirits and casting love spells. She would also have made a great corporate holistic healer, and no matter what she did, she would have done it with great empathy and creativity.

Rachel Green – Gossip Columnist
Rachel Green was made for the social media age, and she would have thrived in it. Her entire personality is built around being popular, from being one of the “famous” girls at Lincoln High to navigating the high-fashion industry, working for Ralph Lauren and Bloomingdale’s.
While she vehemently dislikes being called a gossip, she justifies it as “sharing information” as a “public service”. Across the season, there are several instances where Rachel discovers the “truth” and “shares” it, from learning about Monica and Chandler’s relationship to discovering a co-worker’s pregnancy (despite her New Year’s resolution to avoid gossip) to starting a rumour in high school about Ross kissing their elderly librarian.
Her disarming personality and connections to high society make her the ideal gossip columnist or podcaster. Rach would also have been great as a fashion influencer, working with top luxury brands and attending elite PR events and fashion shows across Milan, New York, and Paris. She influenced an entire generation with her iconic Rachel haircut, and, like Jennifer Aniston, Rachel’s Instagram numbers would have been astronomical.
Ross – Game Show Host
While Dr. Ross Geller was a palaeontologist and professor, he thrived as a game show host, as seen throughout the series. He took his role as the host during the trivia game of season 4, episode 12, “The One with the Embryos”, where Monica and Rachel lose their apartment to Chandler and Joey, too seriously. Ross also got extremely involved in helping Joey with audition prep for a ridiculous game show, “Bamboozled”.
He was also shown several times quizzing people about various things and had a penchant for correcting them. He loves to explain things (with each answer followed by a long explanation) and has a passion for trivia, science, and history, making him the perfect candidate for a game show host.
Ross would also make for a great YouTuber, spending his days explaining everything from dinosaurs to the lost art of letter writing and the word “break”.
Joey – Food Blogger
Joey Tribbiani was meant to be a food blogger. His love of food and natural charm in front of the camera make him an ideal candidate for food blogging/vlogging or a cooking show host. In a world where people take tiny bites and spend hours explaining that morsel, Joey would have been raw and real, polishing off entire plates and more before giving very honest reviews that people could have trusted.
His natural charm with women (it takes one “How ya doin’?”) would have ensured his video engagements were always sky-high. Joey would also have served as the food taster and brand ambassador for Monica’s restaurant.
Joey could also have been successful as the owner of a sandwich shop or a pizza outlet. He could also have thrived as a reality TV star because he comes from a large family, has an easy camaraderie with his friends, and is flirtatious.
Chandler Bing – Stand Up Comic
Chandler Bing was the undiscovered stand-up comedian who, unfortunately, worked in an office job. He famously said, “I’m not great at advice. Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?”
Chandler used jokes and sarcasm in every interaction, finding the fun in even the most mundane and frustrating situations, the right quality for any successful artist. He had a disarming charm fueled by his acute self-awareness, and over 10 seasons, he has shown that he not only told funny jokes but also made things funny because of the way he said them.
If he weren’t a stand-up comedian or a “transponster”, he would have been great at writing comedy shows or even successful as a podcast or radio host. He could also have been a great sarcastic greeting card writer, or even made millions with his sharp, witty tweets and posts on social media. However, in every profession, he would have needed to hire a liability lawyer.

Final Words
Joey, Chandler, Monica, Ross, Rachel and Phoebe are some of TV’s most iconic characters. Their coming-of-age stories and struggles were relatable, and it was mostly their flawed characterisation that endeared them to the audience and continues to do so even after three decades.
