Considering Buying a SUV? Here’s Everything You Need To Know

Considering Buying a SUV? Here’s Everything You Need To Know, There is a lot to consider when purchasing a new car, particularly if you have a family. SUVs (sport utility vehicles) have become a popular choice within the last few years. Size and utility have made these vehicles a great choice outdoors and for families.

With a new Mercedes 4×4 released seemingly every week, it is worth considering the pros and cons of owning an SUV and its value as a family car.

The Benefits of Owning an SUV

There are many advantages to owning an SUV. Size in particular, is the main selling point of this type of vehicle. Though as the market for SUVs expands, the versatility of these types of car is increasing. Here are some advantages of owning an SUV if you have a family.

Spaciousness and Utility

SUVs are some of the biggest and most spacious vehicles available. The extra cargo and seating space they provide is perfect for larger families. There is more space for car seats and strollers and a tremendous amount of space for the family pet and then some.

If you want to buy a vehicle for long trips and holidays to broaden your family’s horizons, the SUV will perfectly fit you.

Off-Road Capabilities

Most SUVs are designed with off-road driving in mind. This means they are incredibly durable and can handle anything you throw at them. If you live in rural areas or an area that has harsh winters, an SUV will get you through.

Higher ground clearance

Ideally, the more ground clearance, the better and SUVs have the highest ground clearance you can get. Not only does higher ground clearance increase off-roading capabilities, people often prefer driving higher up and feel more safe doing so.

The Cons of Owning an SUV

That being said, as with all cars, the SUV isn’t perfect. Many cons come with owning an SUV. Despite this, it is worth noting that each model in the category is different. Some SUVs may be specially designed to combat the common pitfalls within this vehicle category.

Fuel Economy

Probably the most common downfall of the SUV is fuel efficiency. Although plenty of hybrid and electric alternatives are available, the size of an SUV usually means that engines are larger and, therefore, more expensive to run.

Size

Now, although we have said that the size of the SUV is one of the main attractions of the vehicle class, it does come with its downfalls. Because of their size, SUVs are more challenging to park and manoeuvre in tight spaces. As a result of this, they may not be the best option if you live in a busy city where you are likely to be stuck in traffic.

Driving something so large also takes getting used to. If you haven’t driven a large vehicle before, driving an SUV can be an intimidating experience.

Final Thoughts

As when purchasing any car, it is worth noting that buying an SUV brings its own set of challenges and advantages. Buying an SUV is not a decision to rush into, and if you do not specifically need a big car, it is often best to stick with a hatchback or a saloon.

Alternatively, if you are looking for something spacious but are put off by the sheer size and cost of an SUV, an MPV is a great choice. MPVs are a little smaller and easier to drive but retain the added space and utility you may need.
