Super Mario Maker 2 – Nintendo Switch

Super Mario Maker 2 is the second in the series since the first on Nintendo 3DS, its a side-scrolling game like the classic Marios, but the game levels are much different from them. The biggest part of this game alongside playing it, is the pure creation of a level, both from yourself, in multiplayer or downloaded from the Nintendo Switch Online community, via the Membership. You can also upload your own made levels for others to try.

There is also a story mode as well as the ability to play four players, with the characters Luigi, Mario, Toad, Toadette. So its also not just about making random levels, you can also make a story level, however levels etc are hugely popular on youtube as you can see what people have made and people playing them. For many its can be how much like a real game your level could be, or how it flows or for somehow hard it can be done. If you were playing with some you can even take it in turns to built the level so the other doesn’t know.

We actually never got around the buying the first one, with me being in the industry I knew of it, however we just didn’t get around to it before we moved onto the Switch, Tigger through the years have played games like Little Big Planet and Lego, so he has that creative aspect to him and I was sure he would enjoy this.

He has, to be honest, I’m not sure if its the creative aspect or the playing side of it, but to my surprise Roo has really enjoyed playing with him, we take out Switch on long journeys and she has got involved with him, they like to bounce off each in designing levels but they also like the competitiveness of it, trying to make it extra hard for each other.

Throughout creation there is a helpful guide, this can be useful when doing it the first few times, remember you are making it from scratch, you can use a theme that can help you and do a quick edit style, or you can build it from the ground up.

This is everything you can think, the level, the music, the bad guys, the obstacles, the challenges and objectives, everything! so I appreciate you could think at first, wow that’s a lot to do or maybe difficult for my child, It isn’t, the great thing is you can just mess around, practice, try new things, it doesn’t matter, delete and start again if you really want. The game is a side-scrolling game which means though it can be difficult, (trust me you can make it difficult), it’s easy to understand the layout and can be easier to play compared to a big 3D world with huge levels etc..

Overall…

Overall this is a good game, its different to most that are out there, I realise for some the game could come across as basic as the level is that old school side scroll, and some kids will want modern-day graphics etc.. but isn’t all that Nintendo is about, they like the gameplay, as this game has loads of it, If you or your child is creative, then this is perfect, and it can be quite fun trying to make a level for someone to play straight away. Roo is a 13 year old girl that likes games like Fortnite, but she liked this, which tells you the scope of the appeal.

If your want something a bit different, the ideas that aren’t really on many consoles then this game is worth a purchase, look it up on Youtube, see some of the levels and fun that can be made, that’s the best example of peoples creativity, and that’s what can excel in this game for you or your child.

We are huge fans of Nintendo and have this game on the switch. The kids love it especially as they can make their own levels. Brilliant review of the game.
